AIM of the course

  • Build confidence for adopters considering Trans-racial Adoption.
  • Help adopters who are being assessed to prepare for effective and positive parenting black, Caribbean, or mixed-race children.
  • Create a road map for positively parenting a black child to self-knowledge and confidence.
  • Help adopters of all children to feel confident talking to their children about race.
  • Provide a workbook that can also be presented to the matching or adoption panel, for approval, licensing or matching.

Race has possibly never been discussed as often as it is now. Covid has brought to the fore many inequalities experienced in black communities and impacting on the health of black communities. Black pupils are more likely to be economically disadvantaged pupils and have been proved to be most likely to have fallen behind in their learning during school closures. Research has indicated that the disadvantage gap in educational outcomes had begun to widen even before Covid-19 hit.

There is also the impact of dramatically rising school exclusions in recent years. Black pupils are excluded at a rate of nearly three times that of their white peers. Pupils reveal their experiences of racially discriminatory behaviour policies.

The families of Black and Asian pupils are most likely to have been hit hard by the virus. Black people are most likely to be diagnosed with the virus and deaths are highest among those from Black and Asian ethnic groups. Meanwhile, the violent killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police sparked global protests against structural racism.

In this wider context adoption can not be considered without also being aware of the impact on black children, and the impact of inequalities on their families. Black children wait longer for families, the average white British child waits 919 days for adoption but black boys of African descent face the longest wait – 1,302 days.

The course is led by me, Yoni Ejo:

I am an adopter of two bright, brilliant girls aged 18 and 20, with my civil partner. I was also adopted trans-racially myself, and while this was transformational for me it was also challenging, due to my parents lack of understanding and training about race.

Professionally I have been a registered social worker for over 30 years, initially working child protection and later managing children in care, fostering, adoption recruitment and leaving care teams. I was also the CEO of the Bibini Centre, a charity providing residential child care services for black children.

I am passionate about adoption and building the resources of adopters to meet the needs of an increasingly challenging population of children needing families.

You will leave feeling more prepared to discuss race with your child and to consider trans-racial adoption.
